Deck Builder & Exterior Contractor Serving Westerly, Stonington, Mystic & Surrounding Communities

Outdoor living built for coastal New England and exterior work that holds up to what the weather throws at it.

Custom Deck Building in Southern RI & Southeastern CT

A well-built deck is one of the most-used spaces in a Westerly or coastal Connecticut home and one of the most common places we see poor workmanship from contractors who don't understand coastal conditions. Salt air, humidity, freeze-thaw cycles, and driving rain from nor'easters are hard on exterior wood structures. The material and fastener choices matter more here than they do inland.

Breachway Building Co. has built custom decks throughout Westerly, Charlestown, Watch Hill, Misquamicut, Stonington, Mystic, Groton, and Old Lyme. We build to hold up and to look good doing it, from straightforward ground-level platforms to multi-level structures with built-in features.

Custom Deck Design & Build

We design the deck around your yard, your home's architecture, and how you actually plan to use the space. The result is a deck that feels designed for the property, not templated.

Deck Materials — What We Recommend for Coastal RI & CT

Composite decking (Trex, TimberTech, Fiberon) performs best in coastal New England conditions. It doesn't rot, doesn't splinter, holds color well, and requires almost no maintenance. Pressure-treated lumber is a cost-effective option when properly selected and finished. We don't recommend untreated or low-grade lumber for exterior applications in this climate and will tell you why if you ask.

Multi-Level & Elevated Decks

Sloped lots, second-floor access, or simply a desire for more defined outdoor zones — multi-level decks require more structural planning and engineering than single-level builds, and that's exactly where experience matters.

Deck Repair & Replacement

If your existing deck is showing its age — soft spots in the decking, wobbly railings, corroded fasteners — we assess whether repair makes sense or whether replacement is the smarter investment. We'll give you an honest recommendation, not the more expensive one.

Built-In Features

Built-in bench seating, pergolas, lattice privacy screens, outdoor lighting, and deck storage — we integrate these into the design so they look intentional, not added on after the fact.

Permits & Inspections

Deck permits are required in most area municipalities. We pull all permits and manage inspections. A permitted deck is a selling point; an unpermitted deck is a liability.

Coastal Homes Have Different Needs & We Know That

If you own a home in Watch Hill, Misquamicut, Weekapaug, Quonochontaug, Stonington, Mystic, or anywhere else on or near the water, your exterior is doing more work than a comparable home ten miles inland. Moisture intrusion, UV exposure, wind load, and salt corrosion are constant.

We know which materials perform, which installations hold up, and where the common failure points are on older coastal construction. We apply that knowledge to every exterior project we take on.
